MOVA Review

Our engineering team are experts in the field of MOVA control having undertaken works on more than 95 junctions over a period of 14 years. From design and configuration through to implementation and validation, we have expertise in all areas.

Over the last decade many authorities have implemented MOVA as a mode of control, and there are now approximately 900 MOVA controlled junctions across the UK.

Whilst MOVA is an excellent mode of control for flexibility, which is important for variable flows of traffic; over time like any mode of control, it can become less effective if it has not been maintained properly.

TRL/DfT claims that the implementation of MOVA will reduce delay by 13% compared to traditional actuation methods; many authorities do indeed experience such or better improvements, however many authorities do not. In the experience of our Engineers, systems that are claimed to provide the lesser benefits have normally either been implemented in inappropriate locations or have not been designed or validated correctly.

Where any set of signals are not properly maintained, the operational performance is likely to degrade over time. This degradation occurs for any number of reasons, such as changes in staff and/or experience, faults that have not been repaired properly or land use changes; however it can often be very difficult for staff maintaining the signals to notice this degradation as it normally occurs slowly and over a long period of time. This can be even more difficult to spot at MOVA sites as MOVA can compensate based on previously collected data. Furthermore the Engineer is unlikely to be visiting the site on a daily basis to notice any change in operational performance.

As a result of the extensive knowledge of our team, we currently are and have undertaken a number of reviews of various modes of control both in the UK and overseas. These reviews are highly valued by clients as they provide a low cost independent assessment of their system.

Following the review, the authority understands the positive and negative aspects of their system, and they are provided with a detailed gap analysis and implementation plan for improvements to be made. In our experience, these improvements normally provide significant benefits to the network and the end user that vastly outweigh the costs.
